India’s Supreme Court Issues Stern Warning to Prominent Yoga Guru and His Company Over Misleading Advertisements
In a recent development, India’s highest court has cautioned the country’s renowned yoga guru and his company regarding potential legal repercussions for failing to adhere to its directive to cease advertisements claiming traditional ayurvedic medicines can completely cure certain illnesses.
During the proceedings, Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, adorned in a saffron-colored robe, alongside his co-founder Acharya Balkrishna, appeared before the Supreme Court as judges initiated contempt proceedings against their firm, Patanjali Ayurved. Patanjali Ayurved is well-known for its immensely popular ayurvedic medicines.
The case stems from allegations made by the Indian Medical Association, asserting that Patanjali Ayurved disparages conventional medicines and persists in disseminating advertisements asserting that traditional remedies provide a “permanent solution” for conditions such as blood pressure and asthma. This is despite a previous assurance given to the court last year to discontinue such advertisements.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the company’s apology, the court demanded a detailed explanation from Patanjali Ayurved regarding its decision to continue running the advertisements.
