In a recent development in Australian immigration policy, the government has announced significant alterations to the Temporary Graduate visa programs, set to come into effect from July 1, 2024. These changes, outlined in the Migration Strategy, aim to streamline the visa system and better align it with the evolving needs of the Australian workforce. Below is a breakdown of the key modifications:

Graduate Work Stream to Post-Vocational Education Work Stream Transition

Under the proposed adjustments, the Graduate Work stream will be rebranded as the Post-Vocational Education Work stream. Additionally, the maximum age for applicants in this category will be reduced to 35 years old. However, individuals holding Hong Kong or British National Overseas passports will remain eligible up to the age of 50. Notably, applicants must possess an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification relevant to an occupation listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

Furthermore, candidates with a degree-level qualification or higher will no longer qualify for this stream. Instead, they must apply through the Post-Higher Education Work stream. Despite these adjustments, successful applicants will still be permitted to stay for a duration of up to 18 months, with an extended stay period of up to 5 years for holders of Hong Kong or British National Overseas passports.

Post-Study Work Stream Reforms

Similarly, the Post-Study Work stream will undergo a transformation, being renamed as the Post-Higher Education Work stream. The maximum age for applicants in this category will also be reduced to 35 years old, with exceptions for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders, who can apply up to the age of 50. The ‘select degree’ 2-year extension will be discontinued, and stay periods will vary based on the level of qualification attained:

– Bachelor degree (including honours) – up to 2 years
– Masters (coursework and extended) – up to 2 years
– Masters (research) and doctoral degree (PhD) – up to 3 years.

Moreover, Indian nationals will continue to enjoy specific stay periods as stipulated in the Australian Indian – Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA).

Second Post-Study Work Stream Renaming

The Second Post-Study Work stream will be renamed as the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream, with no further changes introduced to this pathway.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Replacement stream will be discontinued as part of these revisions. These changes represent a strategic effort by the Australian Government to refine the Temporary Graduate visa programs, ensuring they remain relevant and responsive to the country’s economic and labor market needs. Prospective applicants are encouraged to explore their visa options in light of these forthcoming adjustments. Stay tuned for further updates as the implementation date approaches.
