Spices have long been the vibrant heart of Indian culture, history, and economy, enriching cuisines with their distinct flavours and aromas. However, recent findings by the Centre for Food Safety (CFS), Hong Kong’s food regulatory authority, have raised concerns about the safety of certain spice products.

The CFS announced that four products from renowned spice brands MDH and Everest Masala, all manufactured in India, were found to contain carcinogenic ingredients. Specifically, three MDH products—Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, and Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder—along with Everest’s Fish Curry Masala were discovered to contain ethylene oxide, a Group-1 carcinogen.

Ethylene oxide, commonly used as a pesticide, sterilant, and fumigant in various industries, including agriculture and food processing, is employed to control microbial contamination and pests in spices and dry food items. While it aims to extend shelf life by eliminating harmful microorganisms, ethylene oxide poses significant health risks. Prolonged exposure has been linked to respiratory issues, skin irritation, and an increased risk of cancer.

In light of these findings, the CFS urged the public to refrain from consuming the affected products immediately. It also directed the trade to cease using or selling these products to ensure consumer safety.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has also taken action, ordering the recall of Everest’s Fish Curry Masala 50g packets imported from India due to excessive levels of ethylene oxide. The SFA stressed that while low levels of ethylene oxide may not pose an immediate risk, long-term exposure can lead to health issues.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Indian spice brands have faced safety concerns. In June 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall of two Everest Food Products—Sambhar Masala and Garam Masala—due to Salmonella contamination. Salmonella, a bacteria that causes food-borne illnesses, can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting.

Consumers are advised to remain vigilant, avoid consuming the implicated products, and seek medical advice if they have any health concerns. As spices hold significant cultural and culinary importance, ensuring their safety is paramount for both consumers and the spice industry.
