Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is poised for growth as the government announces plans to designate 49 additional destinations as official tourist zones. State Minister Diana Gamage unveiled this initiative during a recent press conference, emphasizing the importance of bolstering tourism while addressing issues of fraud and corruption within the industry.

The move to designate new tourist zones comes as part of ongoing efforts to promote Sri Lanka’s diverse attractions and increase tourist arrivals. These destinations, to be published in a gazette notification within a month, will showcase the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and unique experiences, further enhancing its appeal as a premier travel destination.

However, alongside this expansion, the government is also taking proactive steps to combat fraud and corruption that tarnish the tourism sector’s reputation. Minister Gamage highlighted various issues plaguing the industry, including tourist harassment, overcharging, and instances of sexual harassment. These practices not only harm the country’s image but also undermine the experiences of visitors and erode trust in the tourism industry.

To address these concerns, Minister Gamage announced the establishment of a dedicated committee tasked with preventing and monitoring fraud and corruption within the tourism sector. This committee will work to streamline processes, enhance monitoring mechanisms, and crackdown on illicit activities that jeopardize the integrity of Sri Lanka’s tourism offerings.

One key area of focus is the illegal sale of alcohol, particularly on sacred days such as Poya Days. Minister Gamage emphasized the importance of respecting Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage by closing liquor shops on these days. However, she acknowledged challenges posed by corruption and bribery, which hinder enforcement efforts and result in substantial revenue loss for the country.

Additionally, Minister Gamage addressed criticisms surrounding the operation of SPAs in Sri Lanka. While these establishments serve as wellness centers in other countries, ensuring the health and safety of citizens remains a priority. Discussions are underway with the Ministry of Health to establish robust monitoring mechanisms and streamline SPA operations, ensuring compliance with regulations and safeguarding public health.

As Sri Lanka’s tourism sector continues to evolve, initiatives to designate new tourist zones and combat corruption demonstrate the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable growth and promoting the country’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty to the world. With these efforts, Sri Lanka aims to position itself as a premier tourist destination while upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in its tourism industry.
